This is cool jazz, man. West Coast vibes. Think sunshine, a light breeze, maybe a convertible if you're feeling free 'n easy. Recorded in just one day in April 1959, which is kinda nuts when you hear it. First thing? The alto sax. Shank's tone is just... smooth. Like butter. But not boring smooth, you know? It's got this lightness, this playful bounce. He picks up the flute on a couple tracks too, adds a different color. Nice touch. Then you got Billy Bean on guitar—dude shreds! Real clean, precise lines that weave right through everything. And Gary Peacock on bass? Future legend, laying down that foundation. Chuck Flores on drums keeps it all tight but relaxed. Perfect for surfing, honestly. Which makes sense, as this was recorded for a surf movie. The whole album just feels like a good mood. Tracks like "Going My Wave" and "Surf Pipers" are pure, upbeat energy. "Blues In The Surf" is where it gets a bit deeper, slower, shows they can do moody too without losing that cool factor. "Walkin' On The Water" is long, stretches out, lets everyone solo. Good solos, nothing crazy mind-blowing, just solid, tasteful playing. You can tell they're having fun. Don't love every single track though. Some of the shorter ones, like "Up In Velzyland," feel a bit... slight? Like sketches, not full paintings. Perhaps filler, but pleasant filler. And the whole "surf" theme, while cool, does make a few tunes sound kinda similar after a while. It's a vibe, sustained. But here's the thing. Listening to this now, decades later, it ain't just about the music. It's a time capsule. You read comments, people talking about seeing the film in '61, remembering their youth. This soundtrack scored their lives, their first crushes, their first waves. That's heavy. Makes you wonder what dumb little piece of music is scoring your own life right now, something nobody else would even notice. Weird thought. Anyway, yeah, this album? It's good. Real good. Put it on, close your eyes, pretend you're somewhere with palm trees. — Bandcamp Review

Please Note — This shirt prints on-demand and ships separately from our shop, thus we cannot accept returns unless you receive the incorrect size or damaged goods, in which case please email us and we will get a new one to you pronto!
